China Blasts U.S.-Vietnam Trade Pact Over Impact on Third Nations

(MENAFN) China expressed strong opposition Thursday to any US trade agreement with Vietnam that could affect third-party nations. The statement followed a trade deal announced Wednesday between the US and Vietnam, which involves the reduction of tariffs on Vietnamese exports to the US.

At a live-streamed news briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning emphasized that China supports resolving trade conflicts through equal consultation and insisted that any agreements must not harm or target other nations. She stated that China has always maintained that trade disputes should be resolved through equal consultation, and that any agreements should not harm or target third parties.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump revealed the trade deal with Vietnam after a conversation with To Lam, the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. "It will be a Great Deal of Cooperation between our two Countries," Trump posted on Truth Social. "The Terms are that Vietnam will pay the United States a 20% Tariff on any and all goods sent into our Territory, and a 40% Tariff on any Transshipping."

Previously, Trump had imposed an eye-popping 46% tariff on Vietnamese goods, but that was suspended pending the expiration of his 90-day deadline on July 9. The new deal offers US businesses "total access" to Vietnam’s markets, Trump announced. "We will be able to sell our product into Vietnam at ZERO Tariff."

Trump also expressed his belief that SUVs—or as they are sometimes called, Large Engine Vehicles—which are popular in the US, would be a valuable addition to Vietnam's market. "It is my opinion that the SUV or, as it is sometimes referred to, Large Engine Vehicle, which does so well in the United States, will be a wonderful addition to the various product lines within Vietnam," he added.
