Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back personally lodged the complaint in a direct call with Gen. Xavier Brunson, commander of both the Combined Forces Command and US Forces Korea, immediately upon receiving a full briefing on the incident Wednesday, Seoul-based media reported, citing unnamed military sources. South Korea's chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Jin Young-sung, separately registered his own protest in an additional call with Gen. Brunson.
The standoff unfolded Wednesday when US Air Force F-16 jets — ten in total — conducted a training exercise that took them into airspace between the overlapping air defense identification zones of South Korea and China. The maneuver triggered an immediate response from the Chinese military, which scrambled its own fighter jets to intercept and shadow the American aircraft.
