Beijing Calls on Mexico to Ensure Safety of Chinese Nationals

(MENAFN) China on Tuesday called on Mexico to implement "effective measures" to ensure the safety of its citizens and institutions following a deadly wave of cartel-driven violence that swept across multiple Mexican states.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, speaking at a regularly scheduled press briefing in Beijing, confirmed that no Chinese nationals had sustained injuries thus far, but issued a pointed appeal for greater protection.

"So far, no injuries of Chinese nationals have been reported," Mao said, adding that she "hoped the Mexican side would take effective measures to keep Chinese nationals and institutions safe."

The unrest was triggered by the reported killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the long-serving leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, at the hands of Mexican security forces. The operation unleashed a violent backlash across the country, with Mexican security authorities recording up to 252 road blockades spanning 20 states, alongside arson attacks on businesses and direct confrontations with law enforcement.

The toll was severe on both sides. Authorities confirmed 34 suspected cartel members were killed and 70 others detained, while government forces suffered significant casualties — 25 National Guard members and one soldier were killed in the chaos.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has since declared the crisis resolved. "The situation has now been fully brought under control, and there are no further acts of violence in the country," she said, seeking to reassure a rattled public as scrutiny of security conditions — including for foreign nationals — intensifies.
