Myanmar's President Set for China Visit

(MENAFN) China announced Friday that Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing will pay a state visit to Beijing next week, marking his first bilateral trip to the country since seizing direct control of the Southeast Asian nation.

The visit comes at the personal invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Min, who was elected president in April following years of direct military rule after the 2021 coup that toppled a civilian government, will begin his five-day visit on June 15.

Prior to this trip, Min's first overseas visit after assuming the presidency was to India — a fellow border-sharing neighbor of Myanmar.

Beyond his meetings with Xi, Min is also scheduled to hold talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and top Chinese lawmaker Zhao Leji, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian confirmed.

"China and Myanmar are traditional friends, neighbors and a community with a shared future. Bilateral relations have come a long way since diplomatic relations were established 76 years ago," Lin told reporters in Beijing.

Beijing expressed its intention to use Min's upcoming visit as "an opportunity to renew friendship, deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation and deliver more practical results," said Lin.

The visit follows Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's hosting of his Myanmar counterpart Tin Maung Swe in Beijing last week, during which Wang pledged to strengthen ties with Myanmar's Min-led government amid ongoing internal ethnic tensions.

In separate diplomatic developments, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Wang will embark on a three-day visit to Mongolia from Saturday, at the invitation of his counterpart Battsetseg Batmunkh, while Nepalese Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal is set to arrive in China for a four-day visit beginning June 14 at Wang's invitation.
