Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping’s cordial greetings to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, noting that China and Qatar enjoy a time-honored friendship, and that China has always attached great importance to developing relations with Qatar as a priority in its Middle East diplomacy. Wang Yi stated that solid mutual trust is the important foundation of the China-Qatar strategic partnership. China firmly supports Qatar in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence, security and stability, and the Chinese side believes that Qatar will continue to offer firm support on issues concerning China’s core interests. China is the most reliable and long-term partner in Qatar’s development process. Both sides should consolidate and expand cooperation in traditional and new energy, and strengthen cooperation in investment, high-tech, and people-to-people exchanges. China appreciates Qatar’s long-standing commitment to mediating hot-spot issues and its tremendous efforts to ease disputes and strive for peace, and is willing to maintain communication and cooperation with Qatar on international and regional affairs.

He emphasized that the ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the Gulf region are severely undermining the security of regional countries and continuously impacting energy, shipping and supply-chain stability. Military pressure is not the way out; dialogue and negotiation are the right approach. The sovereignty and security of regional countries should be fully respected, the legitimate concerns of all parties should be properly addressed, and the basic principles of international law and the fundamental norms governing international relations must be strictly observed.
