MACAU, September 30 - Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) and supported by the Macao Government Tourism Office, the Municipal Affairs Bureau, TDM-Teledifusão de Macau, S.A., and Air Macau Company Limited, the 8^th “Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries” will be held from October to December. This edition of the Festival is held in parallel with the “29^th Lusofonia Festival”, featuring a diverse range of activities including the Lusofonia Festival, traditional music and dance performances in the community, a picture book fair, concerts, a film festival and an annual arts exhibition between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries. Nearly  690 artists and performers from home and abroad will present nearly 50 outstanding programmes across community spaces and modern theatres.

Through a series of activities, IC hopes to further leverage Macao’s role as “a base for exchange and cooperation where Chinese culture is the mainstream and diverse cultures coexist”, continuously strengthening the cultural and artistic hub between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, and facilitating the establishment of Macao as a cultural exchange centre between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries.

29^th Lusofonia Festival focus on Brazilian culture; traditional music and dance performances to be held in the community

The “29^th Lusofonia Festival” will take place from 23 to 25 October at Taipa Houses. This edition will give greater prominence to the promotion of Brazilian culture through its typical gastronomy and urban painting art. In addition to the participation of artists from Brazil, Equatorial Guinea and East Timor, approximately 40 local Lusophone artists will also perform on the Festival's two stages.

Bringing together the charms of various countries and regions, the Festival will feature the participation of local Portuguese-speaking communities from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Goa, Daman and Diu, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor, and the Macanese community through their cultural exhibitors who will share their music, crafts, gastronomy, customs, tourist information, and other aspects of their culture. The event will also include the Portuguese Traditional Games, football game, and recreational games for children, allowing the public to experience the recreational culture of various regions of Portugal. A "Giveaway Check-in Station" will be set up at the event venue at specific times, where participants can register and complete assigned tasks to enter a raffle and enjoy fabulous prizes.

In addition, “Where Culture Flourishes, Happiness Happens – Traditional Music and Dance Performances in the Community” will be staged by traditional music and dance troupes from Chinese Mainland, as well as Equatorial Guinea and East Timor, at Seac Pai Van, leisure area at Edf. Lok Yeung Fa Yuen and Anim’Arte NAM VAN on 24 and 25 October, presenting passionate and vibrant traditional music and dance performances to audiences, showcasing the charm of performing arts of China and the Portuguese-speaking countries.

Chinese and Portuguese Picture Book Fair promotes family reading and cultural experiences in the community

Themed “Books Nourish the Soul”, this edition of the Chinese and Portuguese Picture Book Fair will be held from 23 October to 1 November at the Carmo Hall and Carmo Fair respectively, further expanding its reach in the community. More than one thousand picture books and children’s books mainly in Chinese and Portuguese will be displayed and on sale at the two venues. Admission is free.

Various outreach activities including book promotion sessions and workshops, will be held during the Book Fair, allowing participants to learn about the creative process and the stories behind picture books, and enhance their understanding of the artistry and interest in reading. Residents can register through the “Activity Applications” of Macao One Account (activity.mo.gov.mo/activity-h5/activity-list-web) from 5 October.

Artistic convergence of music, films and visual arts to showcase the charm of cultural diversity

As November begins, the artistic extravaganza continues with more exciting programmes. Renowned Mozambican singer Stewart Sukuma will perform with the Macao Chinese Orchestra, thus promoting the charm of intercultural musical fusion. The concert will be held on 14 November, featuring the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Macao Chinese Orchestra, Zhang Lie, featuring themes by Stewart Sukuma, with arrangements for Chinese instruments, highlighting the unique charm of the harmonious fusion of Chinese and Mozambican music. The 8^th China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries Film Festival, themed “Resonance of Light and Shadow”, will be held from 16 November to 7 December at the Cinematheque・Passion, presenting nearly 30 works from China and the Portuguese-speaking countries and regions. Further information about screenings and ticketing will be announced in due course. The 2026 Annual Arts Exhibition between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries will be held from November 2026 to January 2027 at the Exhibitions Gallery of the Taipa Houses. The Exhibition will bring together contemporary visual art works by artists from Chinese Mainland, Macao and the Portuguese-speaking countries, exploring the vision of mutual integration and shared growth amid the encounter between diverse cultures, and showcasing the unique charm of Macao as a platform for cultural exchange between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries.
