China Urges Restraint as Iran Puts War Decision on Washington

(MENAFN) China called on all parties to avoid further military escalation on Tuesday, following US strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island, while Tehran said responsibility for preventing another conflict now rests with Washington.

“China believes that military means are not the solution. They will only lead to escalation that serves no one’s interest. It is hoped that relevant parties will stick to peace, resolve disputes through dialogue and negotiation, and restore peace and tranquility in the Middle East and the Gulf region at an early date,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing.

Mao made the remarks in response to questions about concerns over a possible renewal of US or Israeli military operations against Iran after the US midterm elections scheduled for Tuesday, according to an official transcript of the briefing.

Separately, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held individual meetings in Beijing on Monday with senior representatives from Saudi Arabia and Iran. During the discussions, he emphasized the importance of pursuing a political settlement through dialogue and encouraged Gulf countries to restore mutual confidence.

Beijing's appeal followed US military operations against Qeshm Island on Monday night, which Washington described as "defensive" strikes.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, meanwhile, said Tuesday that Tehran had issued a “firm and rational” response to the United States, adding that Washington must now determine whether to prevent a new war.
